The Tragedy Academy

SFC Brandon Lloyd

Comparing our lives to those of others is really easy to do these days, especially with how much time we spend on social media. But in addition to the good, we can also fall into the trap of comparing the bad. How many times have you thought, 'well I shouldn't complain because someone else has it way worse?

Here, guest Brandon Lloyd shares his perspective on what Jay calls "trauma shaming". When Brandon was in the military, he resisted taking care of himself because he saw so many others who were worse off, and who he believed deserved help more. However, a physician's assistant taught him an important lesson: the magnitude of their pain doesn't diminish yours.

The next time you're tempted to downplay your own trauma because you are comparing yourself to someone else, remember that their experience doesn't take away from your own.
